Cycle speedway emerged in post-war Britain as an exciting, accessible sport, capturing the public’s imagination. In the late 1940s, as the country was rebuilding, it provided a way for communities to engage in competitive racing without the need for costly equipment. While exploring the Viking design archive, I discovered that Viking was the first manufacturer to produce a speedway bike. Inspired by its simplicity, I envisioned a modern version that retains much of the original’s geometry but incorporates contemporary components. This idea led to the creation of the Speedway Special ’55, an innovative bike with distinctive lines and geometry, ideal for city riding and occasional off-roading.
